The following information was also obtained from the material in the Scout Hall in Giles St. This first part was issued as a leaflet addressed to parents and friends. Unfortunately it was not dated or signed but I think it must be circa 1999. It is also very much a cry for help .

7th. Holme Valley ( Netherthong ) Scout Group.

‘THE FIGHTING SEVENTH’

Scouting in Netherthong has been active and successful for the last 30 years. Its activities have been many, all centered on making every member benefit himself and the Community. Competitions have been entered and won, games played with fun, discipline and strength of purpose. This ‘unit’ is part of the Largest Uniformed Youth Movement in the World, all united by the law and promises of each section. This small leaflet will explain to you what it means to each boy and eventually society of the f

Beavers. Our youngest section, simple, noisy , fun directed group of boys gaining a start on the trail towards uniformed discipline, caring for all, working together, above all Noisy and Fun. The Section requires a special leadership. Our Group has been lucky over the years since its inception. Now we need new leader/helpers to ensure its future success.

Cub Scouts. The first upward age move, directing the boy to disciplined training, learning new skills in Badgework, Patriotism and a ‘Belief’ in God ( this will be the God or Gods of his family belief and culture not enforcement of a single belief alien to him.) He will learn teamwork, care of others and our Country, protecting its wild life and countryside by positive actions. Games, competitions, outdoor activities, fun, happiness.( Our Group once more has been great since its start). Every leader has given all they can to establish ‘The Best of Cun Scouting ‘ to every boy. Now the crunch. We need leaders immediately, or this section will have to close in the year 2000. The needs of this section are immediate to ensure continuation. Warranted leaders, trained and ready for leadership overall. Please. Please consider.

Scout Section. The Competitive Challenging Group. Disciplined, uniformed, badge oriented, outside pursuits. All leading to the highest awards, Chief Scouts Award and Chief Scouts Challenge. Working under the Patrol Leaders Council and a Patrol System developing cultural skills, advanced safety skills , both indoor and outdoor. camping using old and modern sessions. Giving personal confidence to enter adult society as responsible, caring and work orientated young adults with pride of self. In writing this, one can see success greater than failure in every respect. This section will have no leaders as from August 2000 due to warrant removal due to age. We need at least 3 or 4 warranted leaders , 2 would succeed with other listed helpers. Start now and gain experience to take over when trained. Full help will be given.

There is a further section to be considered – Venture Scouts leading to Queens Scout We once had a very small successful unit some time ago. Maybe some one out there wold prefer starting up again. Sorry that this leaflet shows ‘Doom’ so near but we must close ranks to protect and lead our younf boys to adulthood. Scouting must continue to ensure Fun and Care for every boy. Our Group does not accept Girls as members. It follows the Grail as set up by our founder, Baden Powell. But like everything , time will no doubt change everything. But I suggest we look back to move forward.

Netherthong Scout Group must stand as it began.

Netherthong Scouts – 7th. Holme Valley – Photos & Certificates.

Time line – July 2014.

I was recently contacted by Steve Molloy of Netherthong about material in the Scout House in Giles Street. There were lots of photographs and certificates and records relating to how  the Scouts had progressed and achieved their badges. Steve said he was trying to find a home for this material and, if unsuccessful, it could very well be lost. This is where my History of Netherthong comes in useful as I can load all the photographs etc. into this new chapter where they will remain ‘for ever’ and people can readily access them during searches. Most were not notated or dated so I have inserted them as they come to hand. I have however numbered them  so that if any of you read this chapter and recognise any of them. you are more than welcome to supply details of names etc. I can then add the information to the relevant photographs.
